Bird seed can help birds survive a lean winter but when spring nesting season comes around, birds only have eyes for bugs. The eggs laid by moths and butterflies are starting to hatch out, many of the emerging caterpillars will wind up in the belly of a baby bird. Even birds that eat seeds as adults start life being fed caterpillars by their parents. You can feed the birds by planting native trees--oaks, willows, cherries, and birches are superstars in their ability to host caterpillars! Not sure where a tree could work in your yard? Unclear on which oak would work best? Contact me!
